Yes, yes, I know, who the hell still uses a Braille Lite? Well, me, that's who. lol. And pretty much my whole life is on it. Thursday night, I turned it on, and the keyboard firmware began trying to auto-update. It keeps failing, and I can't do anything else with the machine on account of its continued efforts to try and update. Is there anything I can do to solve this problem, preferably without losing my files?
Thanks,
Becky
First, try a warm reset by holding down 1-2-3-4-5-6-chord all upon unit power-up. If that doesn't work, try a cold reset by pressing 2-4-chord again upon power-up, but answer no when it asks you to delete all of your files. That last method should by all rights work. Consider buying a flash card (I don't even know if those sizes are stille for sale anymore) if you're worried about this ever happening again down the line.
I tried both already, but neither was effective. All it wants to do is try to auto-update. I have a flash card, and I back up my files regularly, but I'd written in a few of the files since the last backup.
That's very strange. Often times, I've found that when a warm reset does not work on my braille light, the cold reset works in every case. What type of braille lite are you using? I'm assuming it's either an M20 or an M40. The type should probably not make much of a difference, but well, maybe we can try to figure something out.
It's an M40.

I used to work with many of these when I worked for FS, when you start getting the press dot whatever, to update the keyboard, it's usually not a good sign. I've never seen one of these able to be fixed without sending in to FS for flat rate repair. I'll dig through my old support notes to see if I have something that could help you out!
Post 6:
It's happened to me before, and a warm or cold reset was able to fix it. I don't know, though, maybe there's something different about the M40. I have an M20. though admittedly, I don't use it now as much as I use to since I have an iPhone.
Well, FS called me back today, and the guy I spoke with told me what I was already prepared and half expecting to hear, that if the machine is not updating, there's nothing I can do except send it in for repairs. And since FS isn't repairing Braille Lites anymore, I'm pretty much screwed. I just tried one last time to fix it with warm and cold resets, and all I managed to achieve was to slow down the messages. As I said before, I back up my files regularly, and I might be able to retrieve the information I'd put on the Braille Lite since the last backup from other sources without too much difficulty (for instance, I'd logged some transactions that can be found in my bank statement). I will, however, lose my calendar and my phone book, as those don't ever back up onto the card for some reason, and it's gonna be an enormous pain in the ass, and probably an entire day's worth of work, to get the files off the card and into Microsoft Word. But it was bound to happen eventually. I mean, I've had this Braille Lite for over two and a half years and, of course, it wasn't even new then. All things considered, it's lasted a very long time. So now all I need to do is figure out which day out of this very busy week I can devote to putting old Trooper to rest. Yes, I did nickname my Braille Lite. lol. Thanks for all the suggestions!

post 7 when it becomes the update keyboard loop, I've never gotten these to reset without repairing. I probably worked with 40 or 50 of these problems over my years at FS. I can't believe FS is no longer performing flat rate repairs on the m 40's.
i meant to post this the other day and totaly forgot.
